How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last? A Guide by Filler Type

what are biostimulators surrey

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular ways to restore lost volume, smooth lines and refresh the face without surgery. One of the first questions almost everyone asks is a simple one: how long do dermal fillers actually last? The honest answer is that it depends on the type of filler, the area treated and your own body. In this guide we explain what to realistically expect from each treatment area, what affects how long your results hold, and how to get the most from your treatment.

What Affects How Long Dermal Fillers Last?

Most modern dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the skin and gradually breaks down over time. How quickly that happens varies from person to person. The main factors include the area treated, the thickness and type of filler used, how much movement that part of the face experiences, your metabolism and your lifestyle. Areas that move a lot, such as the lips, tend to break down filler faster than areas that stay relatively still, such as the cheeks or chin.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last by Treatment Area?

While every patient is different, these are the typical timeframes we see for hyaluronic acid fillers:

  • Cheeks: around 12 to 18 months, as the mid-face moves relatively little. You can read more in our guide to how long cheek fillers last.
  • Lips: usually 6 to 12 months, as the lips are constantly moving. See our dedicated post on how long lip fillers last.
  • Chin and jawline: often 12 to 18 months thanks to the firmer, structural filler used. Our article on chin filler longevity covers this in detail.
  • Under-eye (tear trough): typically 9 to 18 months, as this is a low-movement area.
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: around 9 to 12 months.

Why Do Some Fillers Last Longer Than Others?

Not all fillers are the same. Thicker, more robust fillers are designed to provide structure in areas such as the cheeks, chin and jawline, and these tend to last longer. Softer, more fluid fillers are used in delicate areas such as the lips and under-eyes, where a natural finish matters most, and these are usually metabolised a little faster. During your consultation, your practitioner will choose the right product for the result you want, which is one reason a medical-led assessment matters.

How to Make Your Dermal Filler Results Last Longer

There are some simple things you can do to help your results last. Staying hydrated, protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure, maintaining a stable weight and following a good skincare routine all support longer-lasting results. Avoiding smoking and looking after your overall skin health also makes a difference. Most importantly, attending a review and any recommended top-up appointments keeps your results looking consistent rather than letting them fade completely before topping up.

Do You Need Top-Up Treatments?

Dermal fillers are not permanent, so a top-up is needed at some point to maintain your results. Many patients choose to have a small top-up before the filler has fully dissolved, which helps keep a natural, consistent appearance. Your practitioner will advise on the right timing for the area you have treated rather than applying a one-size-fits-all schedule.

When Should You Book a Review?

We usually recommend a review around two weeks after your first treatment, once any initial swelling has settled and the filler has integrated. This lets your practitioner check the result and make any small adjustments. After that, a follow-up roughly halfway through the expected lifespan of your filler is a good way to plan your next steps.
